Letter from our fundraiser, Len Jones !!!

Dear 'All' at Sankara Eye hospital ...

Following my visit to your establishment on the 3rd December had both an interesting and informative tour of the hospital. J. Babu was most kind and showed me around all of the facilities as well as giving me general overview of each department.

I was really impressed by the professional nature of this hospital. The standard of cleanliness was as good as can be expected anywhere and would no doubt help give the patients confidence they were getting the best treatment possible.

Something I'd not given too much thought to before, was the conundrum of getting people to the hospital itself. But the regular bus service ensures that the patients only need get as far as Pallavarum, after which the hospital bus delivers them to the clinic. To make it as easy as possible for patients to get 'to' and 'from' is imperative for the smooth daily operation of the facility.

I was told too about the regular Camp's that are co-ordinated by the hospital, which sends a team to outlying villages as an integral part of care in the community. Where the surgery goes to the patients to both advise and treat whenever possible, in areas with limited infrastructure is of the utmost humanitarian importance.

As a long time supporter of Sightsavers International have now seen first-hand that the money is not only being used well, but is doing a considerable amount to change the lives of ordinary people in both rural and suburban India. I will be passing this same message on to as many other people as possible, as well as continuing to do what I can to raise funds for this undeniably worthwhile cause.

In closing would like to offer my thanks to all the staff that I met and spoke to, and who are working so hard to ensure the ongoing success of Sankara Eye hospital. But I would especially to S. Babu, S. Visvanathan and S. Prassana Venkatesan who made me feel both welcome and made my visit a very special time.

Regards and thanks again.

Welcome to SAMVAAD - SIAO Times

Dear Friends,

“Journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step."

It gives me great pleasure to present to you the launch of SAMVAAD – SIAO Times, Sightsavers South India Area’s blog.

“Samvaad”. It’s rightly the first step of a long journey on which this blog has embarked.

This blog comes to you with the aim to bring all the partners and friends of SIAO closer and to provide a medium for information exchange. The name Samvaad, which literally means “Constructive and Synergistic Dialogue”, was unanimously chosen by the blog team as the same was our driving force while planning and structuring the blog.

Through Samvaad you will get to know better about SIAO’s events, current affairs, who’s who, glimpse behind the desk, photographs and discussions. The blog aims to connect to each of you in providing useful, informal and interesting news bytes and by letting you know about SIA update across five states who walk the same path.

I express my gratitude towards my team for their support and encouragement in launching SAMVAAD – SIAO Times. My special thanks go to Shweta for her hard work in putting this dream in to the reality and Ketan for sharing his reflections on International Day for Disabled Person, which is apt for the launch of SAMVAAD.

The first step has been taken. Let us now make strides toward taking making this journey vibrant and dynamic through your contribution in ‘Samvaad’.

If you want to expose your gift of gab, share it with Samvaad by sending in your articles to ssiao.blog@gmail.com.

With Best Wishes,

Ketan's Reflections on International Day of Disabled Persons

Dear friends and colleagues,

Special greetings on the occasion of the world day of the disabled. Today my mind is filled with a lot of thoughts and I feel that I should share them with those of us who are either working in the field or, are concerned for people with disabilities.

Several great strides have been taken in the past 30 odd years since the time that IYDP was observed in 1981. In our country too many a development has taken place. The lives of people with disabilities have certainly improved but … Is everything as good as it sounds? Are we going to be happy on our laurels as usual? Certainly not.

Firstly, even today in the name of equality we tend to downgrade disability. I am not ready to believe that any two persons are equals and disability does certainly place limitations on one’s lives. The irony is that we are able to scale Himalaya but crossing a busy street is still an insurmountable challenge. Please do not misunderstand that I am undermining the achievements of the great friends with disabilities but please remember most of us are just ordinary people having extraordinary difficulties.

Of course, none of us will sit crying over them for, survival demands that we give the best that we have. However, competing equally with unequal facilities is taking a great toll on some of us. I would urge one and all today to pledge yourselves to make the lives of disabled more tolerable by increasing accessibility and understanding their difficulties.

Let me assure you friends that in normal circumstances no person with disability is going to sit and beg for help or sympathy but all he/she needs is your ears and attention in just crossing that small threshold.

Wish you all a very happy international day of disabled persons.

Ketan Kothari
